Magic. A Rough Guide. Who are Lizzy and Chris?
Lizzy and Chris are the story’s two main characters and Lizzy is the first character we meet. When Government forces killed Lizzy’s parents and locked her up when she was 5, they thought that was the end of the young magician. 12 years later, the prison ambulance taking Lizzy to a laboratory for major surgery explodes and Lizzy escapes, Three guards die in the inferno and Lizzy becomes Britain’s most wanted criminal. She steals a motorbike and literally disappears.
Minutes after Chris’s grandfather tells him he’s a sorcerer, the high rise block they call home is destroyed by a magical explosion. Chris survives and goes on the run – he has to work out how to use his magic before Government forces find and execute him.
Lizzy and Chris come from two very different backgrounds. Lizzy grew up in SALEM, the ‘Secure Accommodation and Limitation of Enchantment for Magicians’ Unit, a prison for girl magicians. Based in the South West region of England, the prison is the size of a world class football stadium. The main building where the girl magicians are held is a hollow pentagon three stories high. all the cells face the central area where a smaller pentagon shaped building stands in the the centre of the open space. In addition to the main block there is a laboratory and medical block where girls are taken for surgery and experimentation; the accommodation block for the several hundred prison guards and other staff.
The third and newest building is a large dome shaped construction with a rotating roof section that has three large windows with sliding panels that can block out all light. The entire dome is covered by jagged line runes and arcane symbols. Magic doesn’t work in SALEM, this means the girls are powerless against the unnecessary, surgery, experimentation and regular punishments. Girls often go into the laboratory never to be seen again.
Chris was born in Glasgow and moved to London with his grandfather after his parents disappeared.
