Magic. A Rough Guide. The return of magicians.
The return of magicians began with the accident at CERN. The CERN incident occurred fifty years before the start of the book.
a character in the book explains the source of a magicians powers
“Reality is a matter of perspective, something perfectly normal and acceptable in one reality would, in our reality, break all the rules, appear to be magic. Magicians can reach into those other realms and pull objects, creatures, even energies, back.
Consider, we are mostly space. We’re made of atoms. If the nucleus of an atom were the size of a football, the electron orbiting it would be ten miles away. That goes for all the atoms in our body too. At the core of an atoms nucleus, inside the quarks are one dimensional strings. The strings inside magicians and sorcerers have a stronger entanglement with the other realms. By moving our hands in a particular way and chanting from within, we trigger a chain reaction that resonates down to the very strings inside us. Those spaces behave the same way an amplification chamber of a guitar amplifies the sound made by the string vibrating.
These amplifications open up small rifts to other realms where the rules of nature and physics are very different. It’s why the products of magic last no longer than several minutes.
After the CERN accident, some people developed magical powers while some children were born with magical abilities. These births had no correlation with whether or not the parents had magical powers.
When string theory explained the emergence of magic in some individuals the government quickly developed tests to identify magicians.
The Return of Magicians: Gender differences
Girls are born with powers from birth and boys develop their powers between the ages of 18 and 21. Girls are tested at birth and taken away to be experimented on; many die, survivors remain imprisoned for life.
Boys are tested when they reach the age of 18. Those found to carry the string filaments responsible for magical abilities are collared. These are collars fixed permanently round their necks and completely remove magical abilities – along with all free will. Such boys can be found in council run ‘gangs’, cleaning streets and carrying out other mundane public service functions. After around ten years the damage done to young men is so severe they are no longer able to carry out the most simple tasks and they are either executed or returned to family members to be cared for.
